Fresh Balcony look & New Vending Machines

HSC is buzzing with springtime highlights like commencement ceremonies and Earth Day Fair.  In April, there were fresh takes for the Lewis Library too. The second floor balcony renovation—a collaborative effort of the Office of Sustainability and Gibson D. Lewis Library—is completed and gaining rave reviews from our students.

Balcony Goes Green

On April 3rd, the Lewis Library and the Office of Sustainability collaborated on a grand reopening with the successful “Balcony Bash” that drew over 200 students, faculty and staff. Cupcakes and mocktails were served, and many guests strolled through the balcony—which now features tall planters filled with rosemary and lavender, a solar-powered table, and enough seating for 24 people. Anchoring the design are upcycled wooden pallets transformed into wall planters at each end of the balcony. A 24/7 lighting feature has also been installed to illuminate your evening break time or pre-dawn study session.

“Students have said over and over again that finally this space has come to life and is a space we can use – we need more of this! It’s great to see UNTHSC always finding innovative ways to make the campus a little bit more special for all of us.”

–Kush Kinariwala, TCOM student

Ten additional portable power packs have been added to the Library’s existing collection and may be borrowed through the Self-Service Checkout system. USB and Lightning cables are also available.

The renovation of this balcony was made possible by the Student Sustainable Campus Fee.

Expanded Food Options

Four vending machines are now located on the library’s basement/1st floor. Among these is the first Farmer’s Fridge™ to be installed on our HSC campus! The Farmer’s Fridge™ is now stocked with fresh meals (breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, and bowls), with at least 50% vegetarian options. Badge Access Only Returns

As the 2024/2025 renovations continue, the  temporary “hole in the wall” entrance at the south end of the Library has been sealed. The entrance to the Library (near the Java Lab) is UNTHSC badge access only. Badges continue to be required to enter the Gibson D. Lewis Library building as well.
