About Community Engagement Services

Since 1980, Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library has been outwardly oriented and concerned with the health and wellness of the community. As a resource library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, we provide instruction and research services to alumni, TOMA members, patient care providers, non-profit organizations, public health professionals, and the general public. This unique opportunity allows the library to support outreach projects, foster partnerships, and extend awareness of quality health information beyond the scope of the campus. Specific services provided by the Community Engagement Librarian include consumer health tools, NLM resources classes, research instruction, library tours, and research services.

Consumer Health Tools

Local programs and digital tools are designed to increase access to and use of quality health information resources by everyday health consumers. Generally, in collaboration with partner organizations, programs target specific audiences. Visit the Community Health Workshop webpage to learn more information about our current program being offered.

NLM Resources Classes

Targeted classes are offered which focus on specific National Library of Medicine (NLM) databases and resources. Examples of classes that may be offered include: Introduction to PubMed Searching, and Consumer Health Resources from the National Library of Medicine. Download free materials from the Community Engagement Resources Collection on UNTHSC Scholar.

Research Instruction

On-demand training courses, designed for specific professions, are available covering effective database searching techniques, citation standards, and a review of available Lewis Library resources.

Library Tours

Come visit Gibson D. Lewis Library! Schools, organizations, or small groups can arrange tours of the building and learn about library resources available to the community. Contact Lorraine Sheldon to schedule a visit.

Research Services

In addition to educational programing, research services are also offered. Among the services provided are literature searches—including searches of more than 200 online databases, citation verification assistance, publication support, document delivery, and Lonesome Doc services. A collection of research guides maintained by UNTHSC librarians is also available to meet your information needs. Visit the library for full access to guide resources.
